The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance of the play by Benedix, including two handwritten copies of the text, in different hands; and handwritten role books for the following parts: Frau Spindel; Annchen, ihre Tochter; Pfiffkopf, ein alter Soldat; and Franz, sein Sohn. One of the copies of the text is written in the same hand as the role books; the second copy of the text bears the stamp of Theodor Schaumberg, and is signed and dated by him, Philadelphia, 21 Feb. 1868. (The rest of the materials probably date from a somewhat later period.) The copy of the text written out by Schaumberg bears the subtitle "Schwank in 1 Aufzug"; the other copy of the text bears the subtitle "Lustspiel in 1 Akt." (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)

Roderich Benedix was a German dramatist. He worked with Johann Strauss adapting one of his plays to music, probably Fledermaus. Another play, The Married bachelor, was translated into English in 1876.
